商業上具重要地位的柏木油主要產自美國的刺柏(juniperus mexicanaSchiede和J.virginana L.)、側柏(Thuja occidentalis L.)和中國的扁柏(Cupressus funebrisEndl.)。均屬柏科植物。 　　
中國柏木油為淺黃色至黃色清澈液體。具貴州柏木特征香氣。0.941～0.966。1.5030～1.5080。旋光度-35°～-25°(20℃)。柏木腦含量≥10.0%。由柏科植物扁柏(Cupressus funetris Endl.)經水蒸氣蒸餾得到。主成分為柏木腦、α-和β-寸白木烯、羅漢柏烯等成分。 　　
廣泛用于日用香精，也常用于合成甲基柏木酮、甲基柏木醚、乙酸柏木酯等香料。
